Alejandra Alonso and Marina Guinart made a winning start to their new partnership as the women’s draw got underway at the Andalucía Málaga Premier Padel P1.
The No.7 seeds recovered from 4-1 down in the opening set to defeat Jimena Velasco and Vero Virseda 7-6(5), 6-3. After completing the comeback in the tie-break, Alonso and Guinart took control of the second set to secure their place in the round of 16.
Alix Collombon and Ksenia Sharifova recorded the quickest victory of the day, beating wild cards Castillón and Vano 6-0, 6-2 in 58 minutes. Orsi and Patty Llaguno also advanced in straight sets, while Fassio and Eugenio came from behind to defeat Riera and Navarro 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.
In the men’s draw, Alonso Rodríguez and Juani De Pascual produced one of the standout results of the second round, defeating No.16 seeds Íñigo Jofre and Jairo Bautista 7-6(6), 6-3. Sanyo Gutiérrez and Maxi Sánchez Blasco also knocked out seeded opposition, overcoming Álex Ruiz and Juanlu Esbrí 7-6(3), 6-4.
Javi Leal and Fran Guerrero needed two tie-breaks to beat Álex Chozas and Tino Libaak 7-6(5), 7-6(4), while Coki Nieto and Jon Sanz began their campaign with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Goenaga and Manu Castaño.
The second round concludes on Wednesday with the tournament debuts of the four leading men’s pairs: Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia, Ale Galán and Fede Chingotto, Juan Lebrón and Leo Augsburger, and Franco Stupaczuk and Mike Yanguas. Coquito Zamora and Pablo Sánchez will also return to action against Paquito Navarro and Martín Di Nenno.
