The two top-ranked pairs celebrated at the Andalucía Málaga Premier Padel P1 on Sunday, although their routes to the trophies could hardly have been more different. Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea prevailed after a three-hour epic, while Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia won in less than an hour.
The finals brought a memorable week to a close at the Martín Carpena, with total attendance surpassing 44,000 spectators across the tournament.
Triay and Brea overcame Paula Josemaría and Málaga favourite Bea González 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(3) in a fiercely contested women’s final lasting more than three hours. After claiming an opening set featuring five breaks of serve, the world No.1s initially carried that momentum into the second. Josemaría and González responded emphatically, however, lifting their intensity and feeding off the support of the home crowd to level the match.
The decisive set delivered further drama. Josemaría and González served for the championship at 6-5 and moved to within two points of victory, but Triay and Brea refused to let the match slip away. They recovered the break and then imposed themselves in the tie-break, winning it 7-3. Their resilience ultimately ended González’s hopes of successfully defending the title in her home city.
Coello and Tapia produced a completely different type of victory in the men’s final, defeating Juan Lebrón and Leo Augsburger 6-2, 6-2 in only 53 minutes. Lebrón and Augsburger had arrived full of confidence after eliminating Federico Chingotto and Alejandro Galán in the semi-finals, but they were unable to unleash their attacking game against an inspired No.1 pair.
Coello and Tapia controlled every area of the court, using accurate lobs to restrict Augsburger’s overhead threat and choosing their attacking shots with exceptional precision. They broke serve four times and did not allow their rivals a single opportunity to break back.
The result gave Coello and Tapia their seventh trophy of the season and fifth in succession. It also completed a third consecutive Málaga title for the pair, secured in their 27th straight final appearance.
