It was a day of debuts and a major upset at the Kuwait Premier Padel Major Powered by BNK. The women’s main draw got underway this Monday, with several new teams beginning their projects and two pairs from qualifying, Cristina Carrascosa - Marisol Fernández and Anna Ortiz - Laura Ferreyra, booking their places in the next round.
Meanwhile, some of the top men’s teams, including Franco Stupaczuk - Jon Sanz (#4) and Paquito Navarro - Martín Di Nenno (#5), didn't fail to reach the Round of 32. Juan Zamora - Marc Sintes will also feature in the next round after pulling off the upset of the day by defeating the tournament’s No. 8 seeds, Momo González - Lucas Campagnolo.
The Young Talents Show Their Hunger
Zamora - Sintes (#30), who reunited in Kuwait after previously teaming up earlier this season, produced an impressive performance against a team firmly involved in the battle for qualification for the Finals.
The hugely promising young players, who are just 38 years old combined, produced a superb late comeback to book their place in the Round of 16. They were trailing 4-5 in the deciding set and facing a break point, but turned the match around by securing two breaks and winning three consecutive games to pull off the biggest upset of the day.
The victory gives both players the best Major result of their careers, as neither had previously reached the Round of 16 at an event of this category. They also secure at least 180 FIP Race points and will look to continue their run against Javier García - Álex Ruiz (#11) in the next round.
The result also represents a major opportunity for Juan Tello - Maxi Arce (#9) to reignite their bid for a place in the Finals. Both Campagnolo - González and Ale Galán - Fede Chingotto (#2) were in their side of the draw at the Kuwait Major, meaning Tello - Arce are now the highest-ranked team left in that section and the favourites on paper to reach the semi-finals, which award 720 points to each player. They will first have to prove they can keep their Finals hopes alive on Tuesday, when they make their debut against qualifying team Mario Ortega - Adam Axelsson.
The Women’s Main Draw Gets Underway
The women’s main draw also got underway on Monday, with new teams such as Marina Lobo - Noa Cánovas (#18) and Léa Godallier - Lucía Peralta (#28) making winning debuts.
However, the spotlight belonged to Carrascosa - Fernández and Ortiz - Ferreyra, two teams that began their Kuwait Major campaigns in qualifying and have now earned a place in the Round of 32.
Carrascosa - Fernández secured their first win in a Major main draw by defeating Germany’s No. 1 player, Victoria Kurz, and her Portuguese partner Ana Catarina Nogueira (#30) in a tight encounter that ended 7-6, 7-5 in their favour. Meanwhile, Ortiz - Ferreyra came from behind to defeat Great Britain’s highest-ranked player Aimee Gibson and her partner Carla Fernández by 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Several of the leading women’s seeds will make their debuts on Tuesday, including Martita Ortega - Sofia Araújo (#5), Tamara Icardo - Claudia Jensen (#6), Marina Guinart - Alejandra Alonso (#7) and Alejandra Salazar - Aranza Osoro (#8).
In the men’s draw, Agustín Tapia - Arturo Coello (#1) will also start competing. If they end the week lifting the title, they will secure the Tour's No. 1 spot for a fourth consecutive season. Milano P1 runners-up Juan Lebrón - Leo Augsburger (#3) will also make their debut, as will Mike Yanguas - Coki Nieto (#5), the Madrid P1 runners-up who reunite two tournaments later after Nieto missed the Italian tournament through injury.
