Padel shines once again in the heart of Paris, as the main draw of the Alpine Paris Major Premier Padel 2025 kicked off this Tuesday. The tournament, one of the circuit’s flagship events since its launch in 2022, is taking place for the fourth consecutive year at the unrivaled Stade Roland Garros. Its five courts — including the iconic Court Philippe Chatrier — hosted the round of 64 (first round) of the season’s third Major today.
It was a day that will be remembered by the legendary Sanyo Gutiérrez, who made a winning debut alongside Gonza Alfonso on the majestic Chatrier. The Argentine duo defeated the French pair Bastien Blanqué and Johan Bergeron 6-4, 6-1. A result that, according to the rankings, was expected, just as the other French representatives fell: Maxime Forcin and Benjamin Tison lost to Gala-Campagnolo (6-1, 6-4), and Yoan Boronad and Timeo Fonteny were defeated by Salva Oria and Ignacio Vilariño on a packed Court 7 that vibrated with the crowd’s support (2-6, 4-6).
On the women’s side, the biggest local hope is now Alix Collombon, ranked 25th in the FIP standings, who will make her debut this Wednesday directly in the round of 32 alongside Spanish partner Araceli Martínez (pair #13). Collombon knows what it takes to go far at home and will aim to at least match her 2023 Paris Major quarterfinal run, with the Chatrier fully behind her. The number one French player will be the only compatriot remaining, after Léa Godallier (with Spanish partner Carnicero), Louise Bahurel and Lucile Pothier, and Carla Touly (with Arellano) all fell earlier today.
In addition to Sanyo’s victory, another highlight of the day was the win of the legendary Carolina Navarro, who earned the right to enjoy at least one more day at Stade Roland Garros. At 49 years old, alongside Mónica Gómez, they defeated Talavan-Navarro 6-4, 6-4.
As for surprises, the most striking result was likely the elimination of Maxi Arce and Pabló Lijó — one of the sensations of the Comunidad de Madrid P1, where they reached the quarterfinals coming through qualifying — at the hands of the young Pol Hernández and Guillermo Collado (6-1, 6-4). Another upset saw veteran Maxi Sánchez and Xisco Gil (#18) fall to Jiménez-Sánchez, ranked 37th (6-1, 3-6, 7-6).
The conclusion of the round of 64 paves the way for an exciting round of 32, starting at 11:00 a.m. local time, when the world’s top players will take the courts. Among them are the two-time champions Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia (#1), who are aiming for a triple crown in Paris after winning in 2023 and 2024. Also entering the draw are the other past champions Alejandro Galán (now with Federico Chingotto, pair #2) and Juan Lebrón (today with Franco Stupaczuk, pair #3). They will be joined by the rest of the circuit’s top stars, including Yanguas-Nieto (#4), Paquito-Bergamini (#5), Momo-Jon Sanz (#6), and the recent Madrid P1 winners Di Nenno and Augsburger (#7).
On the women’s side, pairs ranked #5 to #16 will also begin play this Wednesday, while the top four seeds enter on Thursday directly in the round of 16. These are Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea, the world’s new number 1; Ariana Sánchez and Paula Josemaría (#2), the only champions in Paris to date (2023 and 2024); Bea González and Claudia Fernández (#3), fresh from their Madrid title; and the young rising star Andrea Ustero with Portuguese Sofia Araújo (#4).
Excitement is guaranteed as the third Major of the year unfolds, with the world’s best players giving their all not only to claim 2,000 FIP ranking points but also to engrave their names in gold in the history of padel and in this global temple of sport.
