Premier Padel wrapped up the first half of the season in spectacular fashion at the Cupra Costa Daurada Tarragona Premier Padel P1, selling out both Saturday and Sunday (9,000 fans over the weekend, 4,500 per day) and delivering two historic milestones in the world of padel.
On the women’s side, Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea ended the long-standing reign of Ariana Sánchez and Paula Josemaría, becoming the first duo to take over the top spot since women joined the Premier Padel circuit in July 2023. On the men’s side, Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia further solidified their legacy: with their eighth title of the year and 37th as a pair, they are now the second most decorated duo in men’s padel history. ‘The King’ and ‘The Mozart' have now overtaken Bela and Lima in total titles and have their sights set on the legendary mark of 115 titles held by Fernando Belasteguín and Juan Martín Díaz.
The atmosphere on Sunday at the Palau d’Esports Catalunya was electric. Local player Ari Sánchez was fighting to retain the No.1 on home soil, backed by a passionate crowd and alongside her long-time partner Paula Josemaría. Facing them were Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea, who teamed-up at the start of the season with the clear mission to dethrone the queens.
They succeeded in a tight, high-stakes match filled with drama. Triay and Brea showed mental strength early, saving three break points at 2-2 and later fending off a set point to eventually take the opener convincingly in a tiebreak (7-3). From there, the Menorcan and the Argentine kept up the intensity, standing strong in the face of pressure and capitalising at the net when it mattered most. A crucial break in the eighth game of the second set sealed the deal, triggering wild celebrations with their coach Rodri Ovide (7-6(3), 6-4). It was a win that meant more than just a trophy. Triay and Brea now head into the summer break having hit their first major goal of the season and holding a dominant 5-1 head-to-head record over Ari and Paula. For Delfi, the victory carries historic weight: she becomes the first Argentine in a No.1 pair in over a decade. The winds of change are blowing through the women’s game.
In the men’s final, Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia once again showed why they’re a cut above the rest. Facing Alejandro Galán and Federico Chingotto for the sixth time this year, the ‘Golden Boys’ came out on top yet again in another closely contested final. Their 2025 head-to-head now stands at 5-1, and 14-6 overall. As has become a pattern, the finest of margins decided the outcome. The first set went to a tiebreak - where Galán and Chingotto still haven’t managed to beat them this season - ending 7-3 in favour of Coello and Tapia. The second set followed a similar script: high-intensity rallies, breathtaking exchanges, and an on-fire crowd at the Palau. In the end, the world No.1s broke serve late to seal a 7-6, 7-5 victory and lift their eighth title of the year.
Premier Padel now heads into its summer break before resuming in early September with one of the season’s marquee events: the Madrid P1. That will be followed by one of the circuit’s most iconic tournaments, the Paris Major, held at the legendary Stade Roland Garros.
