The Valencia Premier Padel P1 quarter-final line-up is complete after a round of 16 marked by tight escapes, dominant wins and one notable breakthrough outside the top seeds.
Alejandro Galán and Federico Chingotto once again had to suffer at La Fonteta. After being pushed to three sets in their opening match, the second seeds were forced to come from behind against Tino Libaak and Álex Chozas, eventually winning 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. Their next challenge will be Maxi Arce and Juan Tello, the only unseeded pair left in the men’s draw, after the Argentinians edged Lucas Bergamini and Javi Garrido 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 in one of the matches of the day.
Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia advanced with fewer complications, defeating Álex Ruiz and home favourite Juanlu Esbri 6-4, 6-1. The world number ones will now face Coki Nieto and Jon Sanz, who survived a three-set battle against Íñigo Jofre and Jairo Bautista.
In the bottom half, Juan Lebrón and Leo Augsburger impressed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over José Diestro and Nacho Piotto, setting up a quarter-final against Fran Guerrero and Javi Leal. Paquito Navarro and Martín Di Nenno also moved through comfortably and will meet Franco Stupaczuk and Mike Yanguas, who defeated Javi García and José Jiménez in two tie-breaks.
In the women’s draw, the main favourites delivered. Delfi Brea and Gemma Triay, Paula Josemaría and Bea González, Ari Sánchez and Andrea Ustero, and Claudia Fernández and Sofia Araújo all opened their campaigns with straight-set victories.
Marina Guinart and Verónica Virseda produced the biggest comeback, beating Virginia Riera and Teresa Navarro 5-7, 6-0, 6-0, while Bea Caldera and Carmen Goenaga also advanced in three sets. Marta Ortega and Martina Calvo, along with Tamara Icardo and Claudia Jensen, completed a quarter-final line-up featuring seven of the eight seeded pairs.
With play resuming on Friday at 10 a.m., Valencia moves into the business end of the tournament with the favourites still standing, but not all of them arriving with the same sense of control.
