The Oysho Valladolid Premier Padel P2 began its 20th edition, and third as part of the Premier Padel calendar, with a first-round day full of local emotion, seeded drama and another strong statement from the qualifiers. Back in the Plaza Mayor, one of the most unique and iconic settings in padel world.
The headline moment belonged to Rodrigo Coello. Playing in front of his home crowd, the Valladolid player partnered Adam Axelsson to beat David Gala and Enzo Jensen 7-5 7-6, securing his first main draw victory at his home tournament. It was a tight match decided in the key moments, but also one of the emotional highlights of the opening round.
“It is very special to win, but even more so when you finish the match and see all your people celebrating it, happy for you,” said Coello. “That makes it worth twice as much. I am very happy, both for myself and for them, that they were able to experience it with me. Hopefully tomorrow we can make them enjoy it again and, why not, win the match.”
Bea Caldera also gave the home crowd plenty to celebrate. Alongside Carmen Goenaga, she made a solid start with a 6-3 6-2 win over Jimena Velasco and Marta Barrera, moving confidently into the last 16.
The biggest shock of the day came in the men’s draw, where fifth seeds Coki Nieto and Jon Sanz exited against Iñigo Jofre and Jairo Bautista. Jofre and Bautista had taken the opening set 7-5 and were leading 2-1 in the second when the match ended by withdrawal due to Sanz’s injury, removing one of the tournament’s seeded pairs at the first hurdle.
The qualifiers also continued to make their presence felt. Alonso Rodríguez and Juani De Pascual beat Edu Alonso and Aimar Goñi 7-6 6-4, while Nuria Rodríguez and Giulia Dal Pozzo impressed again with a 6-3 6-1 win over Teresa Navarro and Virginia Riera. For Dal Pozzo, alongside Rodríguez, this marks her final tournament starting from qualifying after her breakthrough run at the BNL Italy Major.
Another young name also broke through. Manu Castaño, alongside Xisco Gil, came from behind to defeat Álex Arroyo and Tolito Aguirre 4-6 6-3 6-3, reaching the Round of 16 and underlining his growing impact on the Tour.
Elsewhere, Martín Di Nenno and Paquito Navarro advanced with a 7-5 6-4 win over José Jiménez and Javier García, while Lucas Campagnolo and Momo González beat Víctor Ruiz and Mario Ortega 6-3 6-1. In the women’s draw, Jessica Castelló and Lorena Rufo, Victoria Iglesias and Aranzazu Osoro, and Marta Caparrós and Julieta Bidahorria were also among the pairs to progress.
On a day that mixed local pride, big names and rising talent, Valladolid once again showed why it remains one of the most established stops in the sport. The stage is now set for a blockbuster second day in the Plaza Mayor, with the world’s best players entering the tournament as the men’s top four seeds and the women’s top eight seeds make their debuts.
