Rome has done it again.
The BNL Italy Major Premier Padel has once more lived up to its reputation as one of the most unpredictable events on the calendar. Since the tournament's debut, the Foro Italico has rarely followed the script, and this year is proving no different. With Mike Yanguas and Franco Stupaczuk eliminated in the Round of 16, another top-four seeded pair has fallen before the semi-finals. The statistic tells the story: across every men's and women's draw played in Rome, only once have all four top seeds reached the semi-finals.
Wednesday provided the latest chapter.
In the men's draw, Momo Gonzalez and Lucas Campagnolo delivered the result of the day, knocking out the third seeds and once again reminding everyone that anything can happen in the Italian capital. In the women's draw, local fans celebrated a milestone of their own as Giulia Dal Pozzo became the first Italian player ever to reach the quarter-finals of a Major.
For Gonzalez and Campagnolo, the victory carried extra significance. Just one week after losing to Yanguas and Stupaczuk in Albania, the newly formed Spanish-Brazilian pair turned the tables on one of the biggest stages in the sport. Their reward is a quarter-final clash against Martin Di Nenno and Paquito Navarro, who advanced comfortably with a straight-sets win over Edu Alonso and Aimar Goñi.
Elsewhere in the top half, Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia continued their impressive run, dropping just two games on their way to the last eight. Javi Garrido and Lucas Bergamini also progressed, while Ale Galan and Fede Chingotto were pushed much harder. The second seeds were taken to three sets by Gonza Alfonso and Javi Barahona before eventually finding a way through. They will now face one of the stories of the tournament so far, Pol Hernandez and Guille Collado, who have reached the first Major quarter-final of their careers.
In the bottom half, Juan Lebron and Leo Augsburger secured their place in the last eight with a win over Tolito Aguirre and Alex Arroyo. Next up are Coki Nieto and Jon Sanz, who produced one of the most complete performances of the day to defeat Maxi Arce and Juan Tello.
The women's draw also delivered one of the most memorable matches of the week. Dal Pozzo and Nuria Rodriguez came through an epic contest lasting almost three hours against Carolina Orsi and Patty Llaguno. After surviving a dramatic deciding-set tie-break, the Spanish-Italian duo kept their remarkable run alive and earned a quarter-final meeting with Claudia Fernandez and Sofia Araujo.
The leading contenders, however, made no mistake. Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea, Paula Josemaria and Bea Gonzalez, Ari Sanchez and Andrea Ustero, along with Fernandez and Araujo, all advanced in straight sets to book their places in the quarter-finals.
The tournament now heads into its decisive stages with most of the favourites still in contention. Yet if Rome has taught us anything over the years, it is that rankings offer no guarantees at the Foro Italico.
